<INTRODUCTION>
In their essence, dolls are simultaneously fascinating and controversial. Dolls were accused of playground racism and forming unrealistic ideals, largely inspired by Barbie, a good-looking homemaker with a gas stove and refrigerator. They are known to be able to influence the construction of identities and exploration of various narratives. A poet Rainer Maria Rilke in his essay Dolls wrote: “We found our orientation through the doll. We could gradually flow down into her and collect ourselves and recognize, although somewhat dimly, our new surrounding world”. We, humans, definitely do, and this continues throughout our life – dolls are interwoven into the fabric of our fantasy worlds. And in these worlds, why would dolls be limited to our projections and expectations of them and not be capable of even more than us, humans?
<ACT I>
Open your eyes, close your mouth. You are observing their flesh – soft vinyl or plastic, it is fantastic. You are surrounded by a full spectrum of dolls – they represent different races, ages, cultures, moods, fantasies. Departing from the expectations, they bend feminist epistemologies and erase the memories of your childhood. Or do they invite you to re-visit them and explore different notions? Perhaps, develop alternative scripts? No more universalized childhood left.
Your invite to the afternoon doll play has arrived.
<ACT II>
The dolls are here, they observe without affirming good or bad. They offer themselves as an object for attachment of all kinds of fantasies. Mix in the doll, as if a test tube, all sensations and subtle feelings. Tune in other parameters. Is it nothingness that stares at you through the doll’s eyes? You probably remember how realizing the hollowness of the ‘doll soul’ was one of your greatest childhood disappointments. Does it remain the same now? Aren't the dolls reminding us, humans, that death is always near? Perhaps, you are meeting an absolute darkness brought about through the eyes of the doll. It is the elixir that dreams are made of.
